Ohio GED requirements

• In Ohio, you need to be at least 16 years old to qualify for taking the GED or HiSET exam.
• For test-takers 16 and 17 years of age, additional requirements apply.
• They must, for instance, a current withdrawal form signed by the school administrator, and a notarized and signed permission letter from a parent, guardian, or court official.
• GED and HiSET testing is only open to Ohio residents.
• Test-takers can not hold a high school or equivalent diploma.
• Test-takers can also not be enrolled in another education program.
• There's no Ohio requirement to first attend a GED prep course
• There's no Ohio requirement to first reach passing scores on the GED Ready® practice test, but this doesn't apply to the online GED exam.

Ohio GED cost

In Ohio, the GED test costs $120 for the entire test (or $30 per individual sub-exam) when taken at an Ohio test facility. When taken online, the Ohio GED exam costs $144 for the full battery or $36 per individual sub-exam.

To qualify for online GED testing, you'll have to attain passing scores on the GED Ready test. There are four GED Ready tests for you to buy on the GED.com website at $6.99 each (one for each GED sub-exam) so that'll set you back an additional $28. For first-time test-takers, the overall cost is $40 as the state will subsidize the rest.

Ohio HiSET cost

The Ohio computer-based HiSET exam is $93.75 for the full exam (or $18.75 per subtest), while first-time testers pay $13.75.
The Ohio paper-based HiSET exam is $115 (or $23 per subtest), while first-time testers pay $35.

To qualify for online HiSET testing, applicants must attain sufficient scores on the HiSET Official Practice Test. You'll understand that online HiSET testing can only be done in a computer-based format.

Online GED and HiSET

So now, you can take the GED and HiSET exams online as well. Until recently, you were required to come to an official testing center in person but that has now changed.

GED Scoring

The four GED subtests are scored on a 100-200 scale and the passing score on each subtest is 145. If you score in the 145-164 range, you attain a high school equivalency score; 165-174 means a college-ready score; 175-200 indicates you are college-ready and you'll receive up to 10 college credits as well.

HiSET scoring

HiSET scoring occurs on a scale from 0 to 20. On each of the five HiSET testing sections, you must attain at least a score of 8 out of 20 and your total score needs to be at least 45. You'll also have to write an essay for which your score must be no less than 2 (out of 6).

What's on the GED test?

The GED exam includes four subject areas: English Language Arts (writing and reading combined), Social Studies, Science, and Math. The GED test is a challenging assessment and getting optimally prepared is your key to success. You can take the four sub-exams in any order you like and one or more at a time.

The HiSET exam comes with individual writing and reading subtests, so five in total, that can also be taken separately and in any order. You should really take one of this website's free practice tests in order to learn which areas need your attention most.

How to prepare for the GED test

When you are feeling ready to walk the GED path, remember the following guidelines: first locate your nearest GED preparation or test center. Learn about their registration deadline policies, as they may differ.

Become perfectly prepared. Your local bookstore and community library can provide studying material, and there are numerous locations around Ohio where (often free) prep classes are available.

These days, you'll have also some well-structured online preparation options, like the free support provided by this website. but probably the best help is when you combine instruction at a physical GED prep class with a good online prep course.

GED retests

If you fail a GED subtest, you can retake that section twice without any waiting period. If you need a third attempt, you must wait for at least 60 days before you can try again. You get two retests for each of the four subject tests at a discounted rate of $10 for the testing site fee.

These retests must be taken within one year or the original fees will apply again. The HiSET exam also includes two free retakes per subject field but the test center fee is due at all attempts. All of this only applies to taking the GED exam at a physical test center.

Please don't forget to bring your valid photo ID every time you go to a GED test center and when you take an online version, the proctor will check your identity as well.

One test at a time

The GED exam is built up of four separate tests (modules) that can be taken individually. There is no need to sit for the entire battery in one take.
